The Haka Party Incident

In 1979, group of young Māori and Pasifika activists sought to stop Pākehā students at the University of Auckland performing a parody of haka each capping week. Unfortunately, the consequences for those activists were severe – many were convicted of crimes. Director Katie Wolfe uncovers this largely forgotten event in our history with interviews from both in this resonant and thought-provoking documentary.

Ngā Aho Shorts 2024 Update

The 2024 Aho Shorts season is set to be an extraordinary showcase of Māori filmmaking talent, featuring five exceptional filmmaking teams. These talented creatives are preparing for a collective premiere at the Rotorua Indigenous Film Festival, taking place from 15-17 November.

Their journey so far has included bespoke script wananga led by producer, director, and writer Tearepa Kahi. With their stories honed and visions clear, they are moving into the production phase, bringing their unique narratives to life.

Aho Shorts has been a proud pathway of excellence for Māori filmmakers for over a decade, nurturing creativity and providing a platform for Indigenous voices in the film industry. This year’s cohort is a testament to the programme’s continued success and its commitment to empowering Māori storytellers.

The Rotorua Indigenous Film Festival will undoubtedly be a significant moment for these filmmakers and their audiences.

We also take this moment to celebrate the successes of our Aho Shorts alumni, whose work has made waves in the film world. Mike Jonathan’s feature Ka Whawhai Tonu has achieved box office success, continuing to break new ground with te reo in film. Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu is yet another example of the incredible alumni with We Were Dangerous at NZIFF while Awanui Sumich-Pene’s The First Horse highlights the power of Māori storytelling continuing from Aho Shorts. These achievements inspire and affirm the vital role Aho Shorts plays in fostering the next generation of Māori filmmakers.

Whakamana: Empowering Māori in Screen
Māoriland Indigenous Co-Lab Development Programme

Congratulations to our Board member, Madeleine De Young and the Māoriland Film Festival crew for securing the Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga NZFC Development Fund this year!

The Māoriland Indigenous Co-Lab is for emerging to mid-level Indigenous filmmakers who aspire to achieve excellence in feature filmmaking. The programme is made up of four pou starting with Pou Tuatahi which is a full-time paid residency program for experienced Māori screenwriters. Pou Tuarua, where producers and directors join the writers to build key creative teams. In Pou Tuatoru, teams will package their project for international markets and during Pou Tuawhā they will receive market training and support as they head to international markets and festivals for showcases of the Māoriland Indigenous Co-Lab.

Māoriland Film Festival Director, Madeleine de Young says, the Māoriland Indigenous Co-Lab is our first feature film lab, and by engaging the relationships we've across the Indigenous world we'll support five Māori feature film projects to become finance and production-ready.
